This project involved designing a modern yet traditional-looking residence in NY State, blending functionality with vernacular aesthetics. The site is located in a wooded area, away from settlements and roads, and has a slight slope, which determined the spatial solution with a walk-out basement.
The challenge was to create a home with the views to a stream in the north, while letting the sunlight to the living and sleeping areas, and not overshadowing the deck too much. The T-shaped layout allowed us to do just that, with the stem of the T stretched in the east-west direction, allowing future placement of solar panels array on the south-facing roof.
The ground floor features a spacious open-plan living-kitchen area, a master suite, two bedrooms, and a full bath. Utilities are located on the south side, with a mudroom serving as a buffer between the garage and the livable space. The basement was intentionally left mostly unfinished.
The building materials were chosen for their cost-effectiveness and longevity. The upper floor is finished with Hardie panel board and batten siding, while the basement, initially intended to be board-formed concrete, is finished with unpainted fiber-cement panels. The monochromatic paint scheme adds a contemporary feel to the overall design. The eaves are designed deeper than usual, providing a more traditional look and better wall protection.
